In the press notes Rodrigo Santoro speaks of his character in 300, Xerxes, a self-proclaimed God-King of Persia saying, "He's rich, he's arrogant, he's a very unstable megalomaniac. He just wants to conquer the world. His ambition is unlimited. He wants glory; he wants victory; he wants eternal fame. Underneath all that wanting, though, he's ultimately weak and very insecure." He actually used some of those exact same words in my interview with him, particularly"megalomaniac." However, this is a great description of his character, he is menacing but at the same time you get that sense of instability inside him and Santoro was able to bring that out.
Since his work in 300 Rodrigo has been cast in ABC's "Lost" and while he can say very little about that we talked about both 300 and "Lost" with the Brazilian actor. Take a read and learn how he transformed from a small time actor into a God-King.

At the screening of 300 in LA for press we had a chance to sit down and talk to Rodrigo Santoro about his latest film 300. Mr Santoro is already one of Brazil's most sought-after young actors and is quickly building an impressive career in the U.S. He was introduced to American audiences in 2003, first in the acclaimed Showtime movie "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone," with Helen Mirren and Anne Bancroft. He then co-starred with Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Demi Moore in the summer actioner "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." Later that year, he joined the ensemble cast of the hit romantic comedy/drama "Love Actually," in which Santoro played Karl, the handsome office love interest of Laura Linney's character. On the heels of those projects, Santoro won the Chopard Trophy as the "Male Revelation" at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
Santoro was previously honored in his native Brazil for his work in "Bicho de Sete Cabecas (aka "Brainstorm"). Santoro's portrayal of a young man forced into a mental institution by his parents brought him a number of Best Actor Awards, including the first-ever Best Actor Award from the Brazilian Academy of Arts and Film, and the Cinema Brazil Grand Prize, also for Best Actor. He later earned another Cinema Brazil Grand Prize nomination for his work in 2003's "Carandiru," which broke all Brazilian box office records at the time of its release and was Brazil's entry for the Foreign Film category at the Academy Awards. Já, já conhecia o livro. Li mais ou menos três meses antes de se iniciarem as filmagens.
Como entrou no projeto da adaptação para o cinema?
Quando soube que seria produzido um filme a partir do livro, fui procurar o Hector (Babenco) e pedi um papel. Ele me disse que o elenco só seria definido após os workshops sobre a vida na Casa de Detenção e alguns personagens retratados no livro. Eu queria muito fazer o filme e havia muitos, mas muitos atores interessados. En-tão, fui realizar os workshops e não tinha idéia de qual personagem interpretaria.
